Our Mechanical Breakdown Insurance (MBI) policy is a smart addition to your motor vehicle insurance portfolio, covering you in case of sudden and unforeseen mechanical and electrical failure.

MBI can only be purchased at the time of vehicle sale when purchased from a Protecta approved Dealership. Your dealer will discuss the best option for your new vehicle. Not all cover types are available at every dealership.  

Our Cover Options at a Glance

All our insurance packages cover most major mechanical, electrical, and electronic components, including labour. You can choose from our Pinnacle, Optimum, and Maxi policies. Each provides a different set of qualifications and level of coverage:

Pinnacle

  • Vehicles up to 150,000 km at the policy start date
  • Vehicles no more than 15 years old at the expiry of the policy.
  • Hybrid & Electric Vehicles (Refer to the policy wording for more details.)
  • Peripheral Repair - where the policy cover can be extended to include the repair or replacement cost of a part which has not failed but is considered prudent to repair or replace in the course of repairing the vehicle. 
  • 24/7 Roadside Assistance

Optimum

  • Vehicles up to 225,000 km at the policy start date
  • Vehicles no more than 20 years old at the expiry of the policy.
  • Hybrid & Electric Vehicles (Refer to the policy wording for more details.)
  • 24/7 Roadside Assistance

Maxi 

  • Vehicles up to 250,000 km at the policy start date
  • Vehicles no more than 20 years old at the expiry of the policy.
  • Hybrid & Electric Vehicles (Refer to the policy wording for more details.)

Note: While an MBI policy is always recommended when purchasing a new vehicle, it cannot replace a manufacturer's obligations or warranties. An MBI policy is recommended after your warranty has expired—most mechanical issues come out of the woodwork once your manufacturer's warranty has run out.

Enjoy a worry-free and insured out-of-town drive with any of our MBI Insurance packages. Our Pinnacle, Optimum, and Maxi insurance covers:

  • Travel costs if your vehicle has broken down more than 100 km from home and your vehicle is unusable due to repairs for a period exceeding 72 hours
  • Accommodation costs if your vehicle has broken down more than 100 km from home
  • Vehicle repatriation costs if your vehicle has broken down more than 100 km from home

Additional Benefits Under Pinnacle and Optimum Covers

  • Cover for factory audio and visual entertainment systems up to $600 (Pinnacle) or $500 (Optimum) with an excess of $100 
  • Out of town benefits - If your car breaks down more than 100 km from your registered address, you will also qualify for repatriation costs (towing costs of up to $500), Accommodation costs (up to $500) and travel costs (after 72 hours and up to $500)
  • 24/7 Roadside Assistance - Three callouts a year that provide towing, assistance in case of an empty fuel tank, flat batteries, flat tyres, damaged wheels, as well as locking yourself out of your vehicle or losing your keys.

Additional Benefits Under Maxi Cover

  • Cover for factory audio and visual entertainment systems up to $400 with an excess of $100 
  • Towing costs of up to $100 if the vehicle has sustained a mechanical breakdown covered by your policy
  • Out of town benefits - If your car breaks down more than 100 km from your registered address, you will also qualify for accommodation costs (up to $300) and travel costs (after 72 hours and up to $300)

Policy Terms and Conditions

Claim Limits and Excess 

It’s a great idea to read your Policy Conditions which include important details about the limits of your insurance cover.

Your Claim Limit and Excess depend on your vehicle type and the amount of kilometres on your odometer at the policy start date.  You can find your Claim Limit and Excess in your Certificate of Insurance.

Servicing Requirements

You will be required to have your first service within 5,000 km from your policy start date. From there, you will need to get a service: 

  • For petrol vehicles: Every 15,000 km or within 12 months, whichever comes first. 
  • For diesel vehicles: Every 10,000 km or within 12 months, whichever comes first. 

Note: The servicing required to be carried out should follow your Vehicle Service Programme. Failure to complete the service requirements may result in any associated claim being declined. Protecta requires your servicing to be carried out by a registered MTA workshop to offer you the most protection.
